Technical SEO is the part of search optimisation that decides whether everything else you do can work. If Google cannot crawl a page, render it, understand it and choose it as the canonical version, then your content, your links and your Business Profile are all pulling against a handbrake.
I run technical SEO as a diagnostic discipline: crawl the site, compare what the crawler sees against what Search Console reports, find the specific constraint that is suppressing indexation or rankings, and fix it in priority order. No 200-item checklist dumped on your developer — a short list of things that actually move the needle, in the order they should be done.
A full crawl of the site compared against Google’s own data. This is where most problems are found: pages Google has crawled but chosen not to index, orphan pages with no internal links pointing to them, parameter and pagination duplication, accidental noindex tags, blocked resources in robots.txt, and sitemaps that either omit important pages or list URLs that no longer exist.
Search engines infer importance from structure. I map how link equity currently flows through the site, identify pages sitting too deep or entirely orphaned, and design an internal linking model — hub pages, topic clusters, contextual links with descriptive anchor text — so your commercially important pages are actually treated as important.
Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, diagnosed with field data rather than a single lab score. Typical wins come from image formats and sizing, render-blocking CSS and JavaScript, font loading, over-eager plugins and third-party scripts. I prioritise the changes that are safe to deploy and flag anything that needs a developer.
Correct, validated schema for the entities that matter on your site — Organization or Person, Service, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, LocalBusiness where applicable. Structured data will not rank a bad page, but it does help search engines and AI answer engines understand and cite what you publish.
Consistent canonical tags, one resolvable version of every URL, HTTPS and trailing-slash consistency, redirect chains collapsed, and 404s either restored or redirected to the closest relevant page. Unspectacular work that quietly recovers a surprising amount of lost equity.
For sites that render content client-side, I check what Googlebot actually receives after rendering, whether critical content and links exist in the rendered HTML, and whether crawl budget is being burned on low-value URLs.
Redesigns, platform changes, domain moves and post-migration traffic drops. Migrations are where the most damage happens and where a plan and a redirect map matter more than anything else.
Crawl the site, export Search Console coverage and performance data, record current Core Web Vitals and indexation counts. You cannot prove improvement without a starting line.
Identify the single biggest constraint. On most sites it is indexation or internal linking, not speed.
Critical blockers first, then high-impact structural work, then refinement.
Re-crawl, request re-indexing where appropriate, and confirm the fix registered in Google’s own data rather than in a third-party score.
Document what changed so the fix does not get undone by the next plugin update or redesign.
People use the terms interchangeably, which causes scope confusion. Technical SEO concerns access and understanding: can search engines reach, render, index and canonicalise your pages. On-page SEO concerns relevance: does this specific page answer the query better than the alternatives, and are its title, headings, content and internal links aligned to that intent. You need both, but technical comes first — on-page optimisation of a page Google will not index is wasted effort.

Technical SEO services cover the work that makes a website crawlable, renderable, indexable and understandable to search engines: crawl and indexation audits, site architecture and internal linking, Core Web Vitals and page speed, structured data, canonical and redirect hygiene, XML sitemaps, JavaScript rendering, and safe handling of migrations.
A common one: a site publishes fifty blog posts but only three are indexed, because the posts are orphaned — nothing links to them except a paginated archive Google rarely crawls. The fix is structural, not editorial: build hub pages, add contextual internal links, expose the posts in the sitemap, and indexation follows.
It depends on the size and complexity of the site. A focused audit of a small business site is a fixed-fee project; a large or heavily customised site, or an ongoing programme with implementation included, is scoped as a retainer. Tell me the site and the problem on the contact page and you will get a real number rather than a package price.
Crawl and indexation changes often appear in Search Console within days to a few weeks. Ranking and traffic improvements follow once Google has re-crawled and re-evaluated the affected pages, typically over four to twelve weeks depending on site size and crawl frequency.
I fix what is safe to fix with the access I am given, and I specify the rest for your developer. A report nobody implements is not a service. Anything with deployment risk is flagged and discussed before it happens, never pushed silently.
Usually yes, and it is cheaper at that stage. Getting architecture, internal linking, indexation control and schema right before you publish fifty pages avoids a much larger clean-up later.
Yes. The diagnostic process is platform-agnostic. What changes is how fixes get implemented — some platforms let me action changes directly, others require a developer, and I scope accordingly.
Yes, and it is the part most people skip. AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity all rely on being able to fetch and parse your pages. If a page is blocked, slow to render, duplicated across several URLs or dependent on JavaScript that a crawler does not execute, it will not be retrieved and it cannot be cited. Technical SEO is the access layer for answer engines as much as for classic search.
Technical SEO makes a page reachable and indexable. AEO makes the content on it extractable and quotable — answer-first structure, unambiguous entities, and consistent facts. They are sequential rather than competing: an unindexable page cannot be cited no matter how well it is written. If AI visibility is the goal, see answer engine optimisation.
