Reflecting on Nehemiah 9

When we talk about the love of God, there’s a Hebrew word that describes it more deeply than any English translation ever could — Hesed. It means lovingkindness, steadfast love, covenant loyalty, and mercy all at the same time. It’s love that doesn’t quit, doesn’t fade, and doesn’t depend on how perfect we are.

One of the most powerful places we see Hesed is in Nehemiah 9, a chapter filled with confession, repentance, and a rediscovery of God’s unchanging love for His people.

A People Who Failed — and a God Who Stayed

In Nehemiah 9, Israel gathered to remember their history. It wasn’t a pretty story:

  • They rebelled
  • They forgot God
  • They disobeyed
  • They walked away repeatedly

Yet God’s response was not abandonment.
Instead, Scripture says:

“But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in hesed (lovingkindness).”
Nehemiah 9:17

In the very moment they were acknowledging their failure, they were reminded of who God has always been—faithful, patient, and overflowing with mercy.

Hesed doesn’t stop because we fall short.
Hesed continues because God is faithful.

Hesed Is Love That Pursues

As the chapter continues, Israel recounts how God pursued them through every season:

  • When they were in the wilderness — He guided them with a cloud by day and fire by night
  • When they were hungry — He gave them bread from heaven
  • When they were thirsty — He brought water from a rock
  • When they rebelled — He did not abandon them

This is the nature of Hesed:
Love that stays.
Love that supplies.
Love that forgives.
Love that keeps coming back.

Even when they turned away, God’s lovingkindness kept calling them home.

God’s Love Today Is Still Hesed

The same God who showed Hesed to Israel shows it to us today.

We live in a world of conditional love — “I’ll love you if,” “I’ll stay if,” “I’ll support you if.”
But God says something different:

“I will love you because I am loving.”
“I will stay because I am faithful.”
“I will forgive because mercy is who I am.”

His love is based on His character, not our performance.

When You Think of God, Think of Hesed

If you find yourself in a season of:

  • Starting over
  • Feeling unworthy
  • Carrying regret
  • Trying to return to God

Take comfort in the message of Nehemiah 9:

You are not met with condemnation —
you are met with Hesed.

God’s lovingkindness is not just an attribute; it’s the atmosphere of His presence. It’s what surrounds us even when we don’t feel it, and what sustains us even when we can’t see it.

Hesed Connect Group: A Place of God’s Lovingkindness

In our connect group Hesed, we gather around one central truth: God’s lovingkindness changes lives. The word Hesed—a deep Hebrew term meaning steadfast love, mercy, loyalty, and compassion—captures the heart of who we are as a community.

Our group exists to remind people that no matter their story, God’s love is unwavering, patient, and always present. Just as Nehemiah 9 shows God’s people reflecting on His faithfulness throughout generations, we come together each week to remember and experience that same faithfulness in our own lives.

What Hesed Means to Us

  • A safe place — where people can grow spiritually without pressure or judgment
  • A supportive family — walking together through wins, struggles, and new beginnings
  • A discipleship space — learning Scripture, praying together, and applying God’s Word
  • A place of restoration — where God’s lovingkindness heals, rebuilds, and strengthens

Our Mission

The heart of Hesed is simple:
To help people encounter the never-ending, never-changing love of God and strengthen their walk with Him.

We believe transformation doesn’t happen alone. It happens in community — through relationships, conversations, encouragement, and consistent pursuit of Jesus.
